Cambodia Proud to Present its Efforts on Disability Rights

PHNOM PENH: The Secretary of State for the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans, and Youth Rehabilitation, and also the Secretary-General of the Disability Action Council Em Chan Makara, proudly announced Cambodia's commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities at the upcoming ASEAN forum in Indonesia.

During a press conference held on October 8 at Phnom Penh International Airport, Mr Makara expressed Cambodia's readiness to showcase its remarkable achievements in assisting persons with disabilities to other ASEAN member nations. Furthermore, he highlighted Cambodia's willingness to share its valuable experiences in this field. Shortly after the conference, he departed for Makassar, Indonesia, where he would participate in the prestigious ASEAN forum titled "Disability-Inclusive Development and Partnership beyond 2025." In addition to this, he would represent Social Affairs Minister Chea Somethy in the ASEAN-US dialogue focused on disability development.

"In this forthcoming meeting," he emphasized, "we take great pride in presenting our numerous Cambodian accomplishments to the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Social Affairs." He said

The Secretary of State underscored the substantial progress achieved in safeguarding the rights of individuals with disabilities under the leadership of both former Prime Minister Hun Sen and the current Prime Minister Hun Manet. These achievements have been particularly evident in the establishment of infrastructure to support persons with disabilities. Additionally, Makara acknowledged the government's financial support for impoverished individuals with disabilities and the enactment of laws aimed at promoting their equal access rights.

Scheduled from October 10 to 12, the ASEAN forum and dialogues will witness the presence of prominent figures, including ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn and Nancy Sukhri, Chair of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Social Welfare and Development (AMMSWD), as well as a representative from the United States Government. Ministers of Social Affairs from all 11 ASEAN countries will also attend. This forum offers a valuable platform for ASEAN nations to showcase their respective efforts in enhancing the status and well-being of individuals with disabilities, ensuring their full participation and integration into society without discrimination.
